Creating A Balanced Life

So what do you do when you find yourself overwhelmed by your many roles and responsibilities? How do you handle the stress of balancing both work and family life?

First you must believe that it is possible to achieve a healthy balance in your life and that you can successfully manage both work and home.  Second identify the areas in your life that causes you the most stress.  Third learn and use coping skills and techniques that will help you achieve a healthy balance.  Increasingly, the skills that contribute to your success on the job are the same skills you need to manage your home life and to achieve balance.  These skills are:

  1. Planning - set goals and priorities and establish a plan of action.  Plan for the unexpected.  Build flexibility into your plan, but don’t let distractions take you out of your game plan.

  1. Organizing - save time and energy by making to-do lists and combining activities and errands.  Establish daily and weekly routines.  Stick as close to the routines as possible so that they become second nature.

  1. Setting Limits - know you limitations and learn to say No.  When you set limits you are better able to follow through on your commitments.

  1. Delegating - share the load, assign responsibilities, practice letting go.  Because you can do it does not mean that you should do it.

  1. Building Support Systems - reach out to others, build relationships, and ask for help.

Remember life is a balancing act.  The key to creating balance is to apply these skills when you need them and to use them effectively.  The best way to do this is by practicing.  Practice these skills daily and you will start to feel "in control."  Feeling in control increases your ability to cope and feel better about yourself.  The end result is that you will be more productive and achieve balance in both your personal and professional life.

If you feel as if you are about to spin off this planet, stop and take a Just For Me moment.  Develop a daily ritual that can help to relieve stress and relax you mentally and physically.   Following is an exercise taken from my book, Loving Yourself First. This exercise will help you relax and focus on positive thoughts, ideas and attitudes.

My Daily Rituals

I begin my daily ritual with an affirmation.  Affirmations are sayings or beliefs that empower us to keep moving forward.  You can use quotes from your source of inspiration.

Today I found myself thinking/feeling the following positive thoughts (Attitudes):

Today I took the time to do the following Just For Me:

Today I improved my mind by:

Today I took time to improve my physical self by:

Today I made someone else feel good by:

Conceive it, believe it, and take steps to achieve it, then leave it to GOD and prepare to receive it.
